In this prospective cohort study in 49 adult cardiac surgery patients pre- and post-surgery non-fiberscopic miniBAL fluids were analysed for MUC5AC, MUC5B, IL-8, human neutrophil elastase, and neutrophils. All measured biomarkers increased after surgery. Perioperative MUC5AC-change showed a significant negative association with postoperative P/F ratio (p = 0.018), and a positive association with ICU stay (p = 0.027).
