Diaporthe xiuwenensis sp.

Diaporthe xiuwenensis sp. nov, a new fungal species causing postharvest kiwifruit rot in Guizhou

Diaporthe spp. (including their asexual Phomopsis states) are important plant pathogens found widely in different host plants, such as pathogens, endophytes or saprobes. In this study, a new species of Diaporthe causing fruit rot in kiwifruit, Diaporthe xiuwenensis sp. nov was isolated from kiwifruit with apparent soft rot symptoms during storage in Guizhou Province, China. Identification was made using morphology and comparison of DNA sequence data of the nuclear ribosomal ITS (internal transcribed spacer) + tef1 (translation elongation factor-1α) + tub2 (β-tubulin) + cal (calmodulin) + his (histone H3) gene regions. This study further described a new Diaporthe species and discussed its morphology and phylogenetic relationships with other Diaporthe species. Koch's postulates tests identified the causative agents of kiwifruit soft rot. The results of pathogenicity test showed that Diaporthe xiuwenensis sp. nov was pathogenic to kiwifruit, and the Koch's postulates were completed.

Journal of Phytopathology publishes original and review articles on all scientific aspects of applied phytopathology in agricultural and horticultural crops. Preference is given to contributions improving our understanding of the biotic and abiotic determinants of plant diseases, including epidemics and damage potential, as a basis for innovative disease management, modelling and forecasting. This includes practical aspects and the development of methods for disease diagnosis as well as infection bioassays. Studies at the population, organism, physiological, biochemical and molecular genetic level are welcome. The journal scope comprises the pathology and epidemiology of plant diseases caused by microbial pathogens, viruses and nematodes. Accepted papers should advance our conceptual knowledge of plant diseases, rather than presenting descriptive or screening data unrelated to phytopathological mechanisms or functions. Results from unrepeated experimental conditions or data with no or inappropriate statistical processing will not be considered. Authors are encouraged to look at past issues to ensure adherence to the standards of the journal.
