In recent decades, however, climate change has increased the frequency and intensity of floods, with serious consequences for lotic biota, particularly benthic macroinvertebrates, due to their limited mobility and sensitivity to disturbance. The impact of floods varies according to different biological parameters including the characteristics of the macrobenthic communities (taxonomic composition, morphology, behaviour, and life history traits) on one hand and various nonbiological parameters such as flood intensity, artificialisation of the river bed, the presence of dams, and many other factors on the other. Understanding these dynamics is pivotal to improve the effective management and conservation of aquatic ecosystems in the context of current climate change. The aim of this short communication is to evaluate the impact of a catastrophic flood on the macroinvertebrate community of a low-order Appennine stream (NW Italy).
