Flow cytometry was used to detect the Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes and cytokines, such as IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, INF-γ, IL-17A, IL-1b, TNF-α, TNF-β, and IL-12P70, in the peripheral blood of the patients at initial diagnosis, before and after treatment, and at the time of the bacterial infection.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The Th1% and Th1/Th2 ratio at the time of the initial diagnosis were lower in the MM patients than in the control group, whereas the Th2% at initial diagnosis was higher in the MM patients than in the control group. The levels of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-17A at initial diagnosis were higher in the MM patients than in the control group. After 4 cycles of treatment, the Th2% in the patients was lower than before the treatment and the Th1/Th2 ratio in the patients was higher than before the treatment. The Th1% and the levels of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and INF-γ increased, while the level of IL-12P70 decreased, when MM patients got a bacterial infection. The abovementioned differences were statistically significant (p < 0.05).</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>The Th1/Th2 deviation affects the immune function of the MM patients. There were significant changes in the Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes and cytokines in newly diagnosed MM patients after the treatment.
