The main reasons for unnecessary or expired medicines were improved health (39.2%), medication changes (31.9%) and oversized packs (28.0%). Households returning medicines biennially (odds ratio (OR): 2.85; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.13-3.82) and those with many active medicines (OR: 2.14; 95% CI: 1.79-2.54) had expired medicines more often.
