Weighted resistance is accomplished by bridging the cervical spine in all directions. A proper fitting helmet dissapates and/or absorbs impacts to the head. Styrofoam in a helmet will not restore its contour when the helmet is cracked. The trend today is toward a crown cord suspension helmet. There is very little loss of visual field with an increase in the number of bars of the protective face mask. In early-season injuries, where there is loss of conciousness, the possibility of heatstroke should be kept in mind as well as cerebral trauma.
