Control cultures maintained a predominant distribution of type I collagen surrounding the cellular area until approximately 48 h after the initiation of fusion whereas cultures with FGF or IGF-I maintained a cellular localization of type I collagen throughout the fusion process. TGF-beta 1 resulted in the early formation of an extracellular network of type I collagen preceding control cultures by approximately 24 h.
