The physiological equilibrium of lipid uptake and oxidation may aid in the prevention of excessive lipid accumulation. Several pathological states, such as myocardial ischemia, obesity, and insulin resistance, are routinely associated with disorders of lipid metabolism. There is growing evidence that certain types of lipids trigger cardiac lipotoxicity and ultimately heart failure.
