Servir la nation, défendre ses intérêts: Les étudiants français face aux réformes du service militaire (1889-1913)

Abstract:Face au manque de matériau permettant d'établir précisément le profil social des étudiants français avant la Première Guerre mondiale, il faut, pour comprendre les modalités de leur constitution en un groupe social, retracer le processus réussi de leur organisation collective et sa reconnaissance par les pouvoirs publics. C'est la démarche suivie par cet article, qui montre ce que révèlent de l'émergence et de la structuration du groupe social étudiant en France les trois lois de conscription de 1889, 1905 et 1913, et les mobilisations qu'elles ont suscitées, pour l'introduction de dispositions particulières concernant les étudiants ou en réaction à celles-ci. D'un côté, les campagnes étudiantes autour du service militaire constituent des moments de cristallisation exceptionnels, qui permettent de saisir le rapport de force entre étudiants et pouvoirs publics et ainsi d'interroger le rapport des étudiants à l'État et à la nation. De l'autre, elles reflètent les principales évolutions des formes de mobilisation collective des étudiants durant cette période.Abstract:Given the lack of sources that would allow us to determine the specific social profiles of French students before the First World War, to understand how they became a social group, we must trace the process whereby they organised collectively and were recognised as such by the public authorities. This is the approach in this paper, where we show what the three conscription laws of 1889, 1905 and 1913 reveal about the emergence and organisation of students as a social group in France, and the resulting mobilisations in favour of (or in reaction to) special provisions for students. On the one hand, the student movements around military service were exceptional moments of "crystallisation" that reveal the balance of power between students and the government, and thus shed light on students' relationship to the state and to the nation. On the other hand, they reflect the main changes in the forms of collective mobilisation of students during this period.
