Cardiovascular reserves of patients undergoing such procedures are frequently low, limiting their ability to sustain adequate organ perfusion. This puts the organs into the risk of hypoperfusion with loss of function and even failure. Perioperative goal directed therapy is can improve postoperative outcome of intermediate-to-high-risk surgical patients. Based on current evidence it seems to be associated with decreased postoperative length of stay, number of complications and possibly even mortality.
