Only arborescin and austricin were isolated from the water extract of Artemisia austriaca Jacq. The molecule structure of the isolated compounds was established on the basis of IR-, UV-, and NMR-spectroscopy data. The crystal and molecular structures of arborescin and austricin were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. Arborescin and austricin are optically active compounds and have 6 and 5 asymmetric carbon atoms in their structure, respectively. Austricin is a marker component in the Artemisia line closely related to Artemisia austriaca Jacq. Isolation and identification of the sesquiterpene lactones of arborescin and austricin allows us to consider Artemisia austriaca Jacq. as a biogenetically close species to Artemisia of the subgenera Artemisia Less. and Seriphidium (Bess.) Rouy.
