AKI occurs in 1% of all noncardiac surgical patients—270,000 cases per year in the United States. Even mild AKI raises the death rate by a factor of 6 to 8, also increasing cost and length of hospital stay. Fundamentally, AKI is a source of suffering for our patients, and deserves the attention of anesthesiologists.
