Overweight and obese people can achieve many health benefits from running, including a positive outlook, better self-esteem, improved muscle fitness, lowered cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk, and weight loss. However, obesity increases the load on weight-bearing joints such as the low back, hips, knees, and ankles. Muscles and soft tissues that support these joints also can be overloaded and injured. Supporting heavy weight during exercise also requires extra effort, and this may lower the enjoyment of the exercise.
