The weak proper homotopy type of the pair (<em>N</em>(<strong><em>X</em></strong>)-',<em>N</em>(<strong><em>A</em></strong>)-<em>A</em>) determines the shape of (<em>X,A</em>) in the sense of Mardešić and Segal. Several applications of this result are given.
