Completely Dentate (ideal Chewers), B. Completely edentulous rehabilitated with complete dentures, C.Partially dentate (Kennedy’s class II situation either in maxillary or mandibular arch opposing natural dentition) rehabilitated with conventional partial dentures and D.Completely edentulous subjects rehabilitated with mini-implant supported overdentures in the mandible and single complete denture in the maxilla (10) were assessed for masticatory ability after 3 months of prostheses usage. The subjects were asked to chew the two coloured chewing gum for 20 chewing cycle which was cut into specific dimension and was stacked one above the other. The chewed samples were later flattened, scanned and were assessed with view gum software. Results: Values of the hue were tabulated from view gum software and was subjected to statistical analysis. The samples with complete dentures have the highest standard deviation followed by removable partial denture subjects with least standard deviation was shown in completely dentate patients. This showed that masticatory ability was in the order Completely dentate (control group) > Removable partial denture group > implant supported completely edentulous > completely edentulous group. Conclusion: Colour mixing test using opto-electronical method can be used to measure chewing efficiency in geriatrics or special care dentistry.
