Battery trains operation from the infrastructure manager perspective

The French railway network is approximately 60% electrified, while electric trains represent almost 90% of traffic. To reduce the carbon footprint of railway transport, France wishes to continue electrifying the diesel lines most frequently used. Unfortunately, in the current economic context, the complete electrification of an entire line is not always profitable because of the infrastructure. The deployment of battery trains on certain lines would reduce the use of diesel trains while limiting investment in infrastructure. This article details the point of view of the French infrastructure manager about the installations needed to operate battery trains through the presentation of a test case.
