We have isolated and characterized a number of mutants affected in the biosynthesis of β-carotene in the fungus <em>Mucor circinelloides</em>. Mutants were obtained after mutagenesis with <em>N</em> -methyl-<em>N</em>-nitro-<em>N</em>-nitrosoguanidine or ultraviolet radiation.
