Design and Dynamic Assessment of Model Predictive Control for Grid-Forming Inverters in AC Microgrid
This paper presents an effective voltage and frequency (V/1f regulation approach for interconnected gridforming inverters in an ac microgrid as an enabling technology for futuristic power grid. The proposed control scheme leverages model predictive control framework for enhanced active and reactive power sharing towards robust V/f regulation. The traditional PI-based V/f regulation for network of grid-forming inverters requires substantial tuning effort due to the nested loop control architecture. Furthermore, the PIbased V/f regulation for network of grid-forming inverters may not guarantee optimal active and reactive power sharing under different operation condition which could jeopardize the resilient operation of the next generation power grid. This paper is aiming to tackle this challenge by mitigating the required tuning effort and enhanced active and reactive power sharing for grid-forming inverters in a microgrid. Comprehensive analysis is conducted to show that the proposed approach can achieve good dynamic performance with negligible power ripple, in addition to an accurate active and reactive power sharing. The provided experimental case studies validates the theoretical expectation and effectiveness of the proposed approach.
