To sum up, although this reviewer is not fully convinced by all of the arguments put forward in this book, Van Tricht offers a distinctive interpretation of the Latin Empire of Constantinople and of the other Latin kingdoms. He presents the conquest and what followed as a renovatio of the Byzantine Empire and in the process offers an original study developed from a combination of Greek and Latin sources and a vast secondary bibliography. Overall, this is a useful study of thirteenth-century Byzantium.
