UK involvement in advanced reactor systems research
This paper addresses the role which the UK might play in advanced nuclear fission energy research initiatives, the reason and rationale for being involved and an overview of the proposed UK activities. A structured, rational and coordinated approach to the UK strategy for involvement in advanced reactor research is presented. This approach takes into account UK energy policy objectives such as maintenance of critical capability and longer term assessment of nuclear energy systems.Recognising the value of contributions the UK can make to international programmes, the strategy has been developed to maximise UK involvement based on historic knowledge and capability. The result is that the UK is a welcomed member and key player in international activities even through its level of financial support may be well below that of other nations. Following work done on the assessment of critical skills and capability to keep the nuclear option open, the programme has been and is being adapted to take into account maintenance of critical skills. Whilst BNFL has taken a lead role in developing the strategy it has engaged other key UK players to ensure adequate and appropriate representation with the UK's national interests being the overriding driver. The Department of Trade and Industry has recently announced a 5m annual investment in advanced reactor technology and has recently sought proposals to be put forward. This direct investment by Government will take forward the UK's involvement in advanced reactor research.
