The new rates go into effect on October 1.The wage index is based on the most recent data for hospital wage scales and reflects local differences in pay levels as well as changes to the definitions of metropolitan statistical areas. In 1997, the CMS regulations were changed for hospices, implementing a new method for calculating the hospice wage index based on the recommendations of a negotiated rule-making committee.
