Abstract
The new multistate modulation formats for optical communications like PAM4 are becoming increasingly popular. Before putting equipment using this modulation format in service, we intended to learn its properties and limitations. We had a chance to simulate this modulation on Rsoft Optisim and test real modules on the existing fiber optics network. This article compares bit error rate results on simulated and real fiber lines of Brno Universities. It also tests the maximum possible data transmission distance using the Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) module QSFP28-FR PAM 4.
