Abstract

The Brazilian dwarf brocket (Mazama nana) is a small and elusive deer species endemic to southern South America. Despite being highly threatened, its ecology and distribution are still poorly understood. Herein we report a new record of a roadkilled female, compile available distribution records and discuss its current distribution. We show that M. nana occurs in forested ecoregions in southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina. We highlight how roadkill may represent an overlooked source of mortality and reinforce the importance of reporting occurrence records for elusive species such as M. nana.
