Abstract
In the 1980s divorce mediation is becoming recognized as an option for resolving the many emotional and legal issues involved in ending a marriage. A successful Hawaiian program is described that utilizes voluntary, trained mediators who are inde endent from the court system. Alternative dispute resolution, such as divorce mediation, is contrasted with therapeutic intervention and traditional legal strategies; and the benefits of the mediation process are described.
