Abstract
This paper presents a brief review of recent research progress in the field of photonic microwave generation. Five different techniques including external modulation, optical injection locking, optical phase lock loop, optoelectronic oscillator and dual-mode laser are discussed with the emphases on the system implementation, as well as the advantages and challenges of these techniques in practical applications.
