Abstract

This chapter applies a discursive institutional perspective to investigate processes of institutional change and inertia in relation to transformation of the energy system. The chapter draws on previous work conducted by the authors on the development of approaches to institutional analysis as a means to interrogate recent UK policy and energy system developments. It is informed by new empirical data collected by the authors through over sixty interviews conducted with a wide range of actors relevant to institutional innovation and energy system transformation in the UK. The analysis of this data reveals salient themes relevant to the promotion and uptake of energy generated from renewable energy sources via a range of generation technologies. In conclusion, the chapter affirms the role that a discursive institutional perspective can play in identifying how new organizational forms and energy generation/user practices are being created and legitimized.
