Effects of Supervision on Client Violence-Coping Competency :Sequential Mediating Effects of the Perception of Working Environment Safety and Self-Efficacy

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to verify the impact of perceptions of working environment safety and self-efficacy as sequential mediators in the relationship between supervision and client violence-coping competency. The participants were 249 social workers working for the General Social Welfare Center, Senior Welfare Center, and Welfare Center for the Disabled in Seoul City. Sequential mediating effect analysis was carried out using SPSS PROCESS MACRO Model 6 (Hayes, 2013). The results of the analyses are as follows. First, the perception of working environment safety had an insignificant mediation effect on the relationship between supervision and client violence-coping competency. Second, self-efficacy had an insignificant mediation effect on the relationship between supervision and client violence-coping competency. Third, the perception of working environment safety and self-efficacy showed sequential mediating effects in the relationship between supervision and client violence-coping competency. Based on these results, a number of practical and institutional implications, as well as suggestions for future research, are discussed.
