Abstract
The author presents an overview of the technical revolution in operations at rural electric utilities. He begins with a review of the major responsibilities of operations, including power delivery, losses, restoration of power, and planned outages. Next, he reviews incentives that are fueling the revolution, i.e., economics, complexity of loads, quality of service, retiring databanks, conservation, and blackout/brownout. The author examines off-the-shelf technology that could be applied to operations for the purpose of loss reduction, real-time analysis, automated trouble call processing, and automated mapping/facilities management.<>
