Abstract

Monolithic semiconductor lasers are capable of ML at frequencies over a very wide range, but those working at frequencies of 10-30 GHz have recently attracted considerable attention. However, because the repetition rate is inversely proportional to the cavity length, very long cavities (mm) are required to achieved such "low" repetition rates. In this paper we report the advantages of long semiconductor mode-locked lasers (4-5 mm) which use a low-loss passive waveguide, extended cavity laser conJiguration (ECL), instead of having the whole cavity active, all active cavity laser conjiguration (AAL).
