Aleutian expedition of V. I. Jochelson 1909–1910 years in photo-collection MAE RAS

Abstract

. This article focuses on the “Aleutian” period of work of the Ryabushinsky Expedition, when in 1909–1910 years V. I. Jochelson and his wife D. L. Jochelson-Brodsky conducted comprehensive research on the Aleutian Islands. They were engaged in archaeological excavations, conducted anthropological studies, collected ethnographic collections, recorded the Aleut folk lore, studied their language, and took more than a thousand photographs. Over 1080 negatives taken by V. I. Jochelson and D. L. Jochelson-Brodsky are in storage in MAE RAS now. The article describes current museum numbers and names of the “Aleutian” negatives. During the registration of the negatives in 1918 and 1922, the mistakes had been made and some negatives taken in the Aleutian Islands were marked as one in Kamchatka. The article clarifies information regarding the names of the negatives and their geographic location based on the exploring of museum documentation. At present, the field materials of the Ryabushinsky Expedition are stored in several archives and scientific centers in Russia and the United States.
