Rebellion and Inheritance: A Study of Religious Theme of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials

Abstract

: This article aims at shedding light on people’s free will and religious belief in our modern life by His Dark Materials. The theme of His Dark Materials is complicated and profound, including Paradise Lost from John Milton and many philosophical thoughts from eastern and western and so on. Pullman has his own original ideas, not only rebel, but also inherit. He thinks the transformation from innocence to experience is the first step to true wise, which is different from Milton. It’s indispensable and wonderful. Also, there are some other aspects we need to pay attention. Pullman fully mobilizes his imagination in characterization, environmental setting, plot construction. and many proper fantastic elements to service his theme. Finally, the sublimation triggers the reflection of modern people’s free will.
