Finding Your Seat at the Table: Roles for Librarians on In-stitutional Regulatory Boards and Com-mittees

Abstract

In Finding Your Seat at the Table, editors Susan Harnett and Laureen Cantwell illustrate how librarians can support Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC) at their respective institutions. Institutional Review Boards are committees charged with reviewing and monitoring research using human subjects whereas Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees oversee the care and management of animals used for labs or experiments. “Part I: Institutional Review Board” describes the role and function of IRBs, major historical events that lead to the creation of the board, and how librarians can support IRBs at their own institution. Similarly, “Part 2: Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee” outlines the role of IACUC, a synopsis of the history of animal research, and how librarians can assist in animal research. “Part III: Creating and Expanding Opportunities for Libraries and Librarians in Institutional Research,” provides case studies of how librarians can support institutional human and animal research.
