Abstract

It transpires that there is a significant relationship between the experience of being a semi-professional musician, a simulationist, a computer scientist and being in the right place at the right time. A previous paper by the author relates an experience he had in Iran concerning a popular song title and its communication with the conscious mind. This paper explores some possibilities for exploration of the links between live public performance and the representation and storage of melodies, chord sequences and words in the minds of the musicians. Live performance implies real-time production of specific songs, previously developed, arranged and practised by the performers at a professional level, prior to being performed in public semi-professional situations. Success, or otherwise, leads to future bookings of the band if the quality is appropriate. From the authors' long experience, it is clear that the brain successively refines the structure of the data to optimise the storage requirements, particularly in respect of audience reaction, mistakes, needs of dancers, unexpected continuation, key change and other dynamic requirements. Such refinement of stored data and its representation presents an opportunity for study and understanding of the operation and dynamics of the human mind.
