İsmail Hakkı Bursevî's Contributions to the Science of Furûq (The Example of Furûq-ı Hakkî)

Abstract

This article is about the contributions of the Ottoman mystic and scholar İsmâil Hakkı Bursevî (d. 1653/1725) to the science of furûk of his book known as Furûk-ı Hakkî and consisting of four chapters on Arabic language sciences. The last part of Furûq-ı Hakkî is devoted to the determination of the nuances between the words whose meanings are thought to be the same. The interest in the work is understood from the studies on it during the Ottoman period. Due to this importance, it was thought that an academic study specific to Furûq-ı Hakkî would be beneficial and would contribute to the enrichment of the furûk literature. In the first part of the study, Furûq-ı Hakkî was introduced and its content was examined, and in the second part, the work was analyzed in terms of its contributions to the science of furûq, its place among the independent furûk books and its sources. In this study, it was concluded that Furûq-ı Hakkî is an important source of the field with more than five hundred furûq items. The work has been compiled from many sources. Among them, there are many sources written by Ottoman scholars. This situation increases the value of Furûq-ı Hakkî in terms of reaching new furûq sources and contributing to the studies on the Ottoman scientific tradition. On the other hand, the work; It has been considered that it can be a reference book for all researchers who are engaged in basic Islamic sciences as well as linguists due to its aspects that shed light on the nuance between many terms related to mysticism, nahw and other Islamic sciences.
