Biosecurity for horse facilities.

Abstract

Abstract This chapter enumerates some of the biosecurity challenges in the equine industry and how principles such as reducing exposure, susceptibility, and increasing resistance can help control diseases in horses. This chapter also presents pointers on improving biosecurity in equine facilities and personnel which includes risk assessment, quarantine, cohorting, zoning, access management, isolation, syndromic surveillance, active surveillance, event attendance procedures, personal hygiene, cleaning and disinfection, surface materials, manure management, pasture management, transportation, personnel, auditing, and communication.
