Abstract In this chapter, the negative impacts of rodents on the health and performance of livestock were presented focusing on the following topics: rodents and the reasons for their success; monitoring: how to identify a rodent problem; how to control rodents; preventing the entrance of the rodents; control of rodents inside the animal houses; and when to control rodents.

Abstract An overview on the general principles of biosecurity applicable to veterinary clinics and veterinary practices was discussed. This chapter also presents two cases on how to implement biosecurity in a veterinary practice/clinic, the first case occurred in a dog with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus while the second case happened in a horse with salmonellosis. Implementing rules that should be followed for both cases focused on patient care, personal protection when handling the patient, management of premises, equipment and materials, and waste management. The role of internal audit and veterinary education for biosecurity in animal clinics as well as in practice are also given emphasis in this chapter.

Abstract This chapter describes the impact of insects, mites and ticks on animal health, welfare and production, and the implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) to control these pests and ectoparasites as part of a biosecurity programme. The damages caused and biosecurity measures for cattle, sheep, pig, horse and poultry pests are discussed.

Abstract In this chapter the author focused on the different aspects of cleaning and disinfecting drinking water highlighting the significance of water hygiene in the contemporary animal industry. This chapter also includes a review on subject areas important to water hygiene which includes: chemistry of drinking water; impact of contaminants on water intake and physiology; biosecurity aspect of drinking water contaminants (mineral, chemical, biologically active contaminants, immunomodulatory compounds, antimicrobial agents, biological contaminants, zoonotic pathogens associated with drinking water); evaluating drinking water safety (water analyses); risk associated with drinking water contaminants; water biosecurity and risk management; and water treatment (sanitation and practical approach to drinking water hygiene).
