Abstract

The article presents the development of theoretical concepts on the problem of colon and dash functionality in English and Russian communicative practices of the XX–XXI centuries. It is stated that there are two historical periods in the development of colon and dash usage in English and Russian linguistic cultures, which mark the transition from prescriptive to the descriptive norm of punctuation marks. It is also important to take into account communicative discursive characteristics, functional pragmatics, the specific aspects of text creation and perception.
