PRACTICAL PREPARATION OF INTERNAL INDEXES

Abstract

' Since a book was selected as the experi mental document and since indexes to mono graphs provide a widely used and generally accepted form of retrieval system, it is reason able to base the evaluation of the mechanical index on a comparison with those indexes generally found in the same type of material. The task was, in other words, to establish evaluation criteria, use them to determine an average level of indexing for published man ually-produced indexes, and compare the automatically produced index to this average.'
