Contemporary scientific debates call for the problematics of inequality and development to come close to each other. This article intends to contributes to the understanding of the relations between these scientific issues, considering the social inequalities of the country and the specific disadvantages of the low-density territories. To this end, we analyse how demography, education, employment, social classes and health are associated to social inequalities between the regions of the national territory. The empirical results show that in the Portuguese society there is a persistence of unequal development processes at the regional scale and in regard to the low density territories.
