Gorging on Prodicus: Prodicus of Ceos, Cleon, and Aristophanes' Acharnians

Abstract

Abstract:Acharnians 4–6 alludes to an early diplomatic activity on the part of Prodicus that involved the islanders, Cleon, and accusations of bribe taking. The allusion is cleverly imbedded in a comedic parody of a verbal distinction known to have been made by Prodicus. The Sophist was famous for drawing fine distinctions between the meanings of near synonyms, a unique wisdom that he showcased in the many epideictic speeches that he delivered in Athens. As a well-known public intellectual, he was thus a favourite target of Aristophanes, whom we suggest Aristophanes is parodying here.Résumé:Le passage des Acharniens 4–6 fait allusion à une activité diplomatique antérieure de la part de Prodicos qui impliquait les insulaires, Cléon et des accusations de corruption. L'allusion est habilement insérée dans une parodie comique d'une distinction verbale connue pour avoir été faite par Prodicos. Ce sophiste était réputé pour marquer de fines distinctions entre les significations de synonymes proches, un savoir unique dont il faisait montre dans les nombreux discours épidéictiques qu'il prononça à Athènes. En tant qu'intellectuel en vue, il était la cible préférée d'Aristophane, d'où l'hypothèse d'une parodie dans ce passage.
