Iconografías asociadas al mono araña en las Culturas del Centro de Veracruz

Abstract

Este ensayo analiza el papel protagónico de una diosa representada en una estatua de tipo monumental procedente de la Gran Ofrenda del Montículo 2 del sitio de El Zapotal. La argumentación se funda en los datos arqueológicos, con las interpretaciones de los arqueólogos, en los aspectos señaléticos de la pieza, el tocado «en domo», la diadema con la figura parcial tridimensional –cabeza y busto– del mono araña, el artificio dorsal de cinco ramales, el ceñidor ofidio y la postura sedente, y en fuentes que reportan sobre el mono araña en las culturas prehispánicas, particularmente los referentes a las deidades madres telúricas. This essay analyzes the protagonist role of a goddess represented in a monumental statue from the Great Offering of Mound 2 from the site of El Zapotal. The argumentation is based on the archaeological data, with the interpretations of archaeologists, on the signaling aspects of the piece, the headdress “in dome”, the diadem with the partial threedimensional figure--head and bust--of the spider monkey, the dorsal device of five branches, the ophidian girdle and the seated posture, and in sources that report on the spider monkey in the pre-Hispanic cultures, particularly those referring to the telluric mother deities.
