Abstract

This essay analyzes the protagonist role of a goddess represented in a monumental statue from the Great Offering of Mound 2 from the site of El Zapotal. The argumentation is based on the archaeological data, with the interpretations of archaeologists, on the signaling aspects of the piece, the headdress “in dome”, the diadem with the partial threedimensional figure--head and bust--of the spider monkey, the dorsal device of five branches, the ophidian girdle and the seated posture, and in sources that report on the spider monkey in the pre-Hispanic cultures, particularly those referring to the telluric mother deities.
