Abstract
Common causes of failures in structures are unexpected seismic vibrations, strong winds and huge waves often leading to human and economic losses. With increasing population and urbanization, the trend of high rise buildings is catching up in the country. Seismic isolation is effective in reducing the energy transferred to the structure, however at the cost of increased lateral displacement, which could reduce occupant comfort. Controlling the vibrations of building structures using semi-active devices in addition to base isolation is a promising technique to reduce inter storey displacement. This article covers simulation studies of such a technique and proposes experimental verification for the same.
