Abstract
From the middle of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century, the discipline of botany went through enormous change: from being a branch of natural history, botany developed into an experimental laboratory science, while intensive interdisciplinary collaboration developed between the neighbouring disciplines of biophysics and biochemistry. This paper traces these changes through the presentation of a few selected landmarks in the history of photosynthesis research.
