Abstract

Vocabulary is vital in developing all four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. This article presents a quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effect of vocabulary journal; an innovative attempt to improve the young learners’ vocabulary learning. The study involved 19 Primary Year 6 (12 years old) pupils at a sub-urban school in Limbang, Sarawak. Data was collected through pre-test and post-test as well as an open-ended questionnaire. Findings revealed that vocabulary journal had a positive effect in which all 19 (100%) pupils’ vocabulary learning improved. The t-test showed a significant difference in pupils’ vocabulary after learning vocabulary via the vocabulary journal. The pupils perceived the vocabulary journal for memory-retention and word comprehension, as well as user-friendly and interesting. This indicates the potential of vocabulary journal as an effective tool in teaching vocabulary.
