Abstract

The congestion of transmission lines due to feeder outages is one of the major issues in power system network. The penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) at optimum locations is an effective method for congestion relief. Identification of optimal site and size of DG penetration plays an important role in transmission line congestion management. This work presents the development of an algorithm for optimal siting and sizing of DG's for the congestion relief of transmission lines. Load flow study for outages of different lines in an IEEE 14 bus system has been carried out using ETAP software. The severity of outages are analyzed and the feasibility of DG penetration for congestion relief is investigated. The work emphasizes the reliability of 2 identified parameters such as severity index (SI) and sensitivity factor (SF) for optimal siting and sizing of DG's for congestion relief.
