This chapter reflects on the principles of smart tourism development, charts its conceptual and practical evolution and discusses its role in future tourism development around the globe. Specifically, it argues for a shift away from using smart tourism to advance a purely technological agenda and highlights the need to develop smart tourism ideas into frameworks that can guide tourism development research and practice.
