Abstract This chapter discusses the context of tourism employment, the practice of sustainable human resource management (HRM), and the application of sustainable HRM in tourism. It is suggested that the successful implementation of sustainable HRM begins at the organizational level, while also recognizing the interaction of the economic environment on the organization's processes and its effects on its local environment, economically, socially and environmentally. The macro-level and organizational-level considerations in implementing a sustainable HRM approach are discussed.

Abstract Despite all the criticisms, the revelation of its negative, as well as positive, impacts on destinations and, most recently, the appearance of the media-generated phenomenon of overtourism, tourism has continued to grow and to spread globally, often, it would appear, without formal direction or control, and to diversify into an increasing number of sub-forms. This chapter discusses this pattern of development and some of the enabling forces that have influenced and shaped tourism and its effects, and comments on some key issues that warrant further examination. These include the pattern of development in destinations, the determinants of the spatial spread of tourism, the fallacies that have grown up around tourism and the lack of influence of academia on the phenomenon despite decades of study. In conclusion, some thought is given to potential future issues and directions for the development of tourism.

The analysis introduces how the evolution of the city, its urbanization and the overall growth of Thai tourism more generally have shaped the present state of Bangkok. The chapter draws on existing literature augmented by in-depth interviews; specifically, six significant and influential interviewees from both the private and public sectors of Bangkok help reveal how the past and present are shaping the future of tourism in the city.

Abstract This chapter examines the interactions between politics and international tourism which are shown to be inextricably linked in assorted ways. The focus of the discussion is on members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). After some general observations with regards to the tourism-politics relationship, the chapter looks back to the 1970s when political uncertainties and upheavals characterized parts of the region and impeded tourism. Such circumstances are then contrasted with those of the current era which tend to be more settled, reflecting the political shifts occurring in the intervening years, and which are more favourable for tourism.

This argument is supported with an analysis of two films which explore white female sex tourism to countries in the Global South. Abstract This chapter reflects on a neglected export sector in the Nigerian economy, that of tourism, in order to identify whether some refinements to the existing principles of developing tourism are merited. It then goes on to hint at both the issues that deserve consideration for future tourism development in Nigeria and also the general implications that the continued neglect of the sector portends. Strategic resource allocation, human resource development, funding of the tourism sector, and public-private sector roles are identified as the essential inputs to tourism development in general, highlighting their strategic importance with respect to policy and planning principles, as a framework for exploring the future growth and direction of the tourism sector in Nigeria in particular.
