The course covers the major principles and methods for the appearance acquisition of a wide range of different materials ranging from diffuse surfaces over glossy surfaces and highly specular surfaces to even surfaces exhibiting strong subsurface scattering effects. Different acquisition devices proposed in literature are presented and their benefits and drawbacks are discussed. Special emphasis is laid on different models and methods to represent appearance. Compression techniques and methods for appearance synthesis are addressed as well as techniques and methods for transmission and rendering. Abstract

This course provides an introduction and overview regarding the field of capturing and modeling the appearance of materials and objects targeted to the specific needs of automotive applications as well as video games, movies or advertisement. The course covers the major principles and methods for the appearance acquisition of a wide range of different materials ranging from diffuse surfaces over glossy surfaces and highly specular surfaces to even surfaces exhibiting strong subsurface scattering effects.
