The Stance-taking Functions of gǎnjué(feel) and juéde(think) in Mandarin Conversation

Abstract

In natural spoken Chinese, gǎnjue(feel) and juede(think) are used very frequently. The article aims to explore the interactional functions of their high-frequency formats wǒ gǎnjue(I feel) and wǒ juede(I think) from an interactive perspective. First, we count the semantic function distribution of gǎnjue(feel)and juede(think) by quantitative analysis; second, using the stance triangle theory, we analyze the positions, evaluates and aligns function of both wǒ gǎnjue(I feel) and wǒ juede(I think), and show that they have certain discourse marker function. Finally, wǒ gǎnjue (I feel) focuses on subjectivity, while wǒ juede (I think) is more used to interact with another communicative subject and show  inter-subjectivity.
