Abstract

The propagation of a light pulse through a non-linear dispersionless fibre is investigated classically and quantum mechanically. Attention is paid to the instantaneous action of the Kerr medium. The difference between the quantum mechanical and classical dynamics is discussed. It is shown, that for optical fibre non-linearities available today, the dynamics can be completely understood in a semiclassical way.
